Course Description
Theater appreciation is a one semester course for non-majors. Texts for the course are either elements-only texts or elements-and-history texts. Elements-only texts focus on the fundamental elements of theater – the audience, the director, the lighting. They may include timelines, have a single history chapter, or include historical material to provide context, but they do not extensively cover the history of the theater. Our leading book for this type of course is The Theater Experience, by Edwin Wilson. Elements-plus-history texts give equal coverage to the elements and to the development of theater through time. These books will have separate chapters on each significant period of theater history. Our leading book for this type of course is Theater: The Lively Art, by Edwin Wilson and Alvin Goldfarb.
